Solar nails (a type of acrylic nails) have grown in popularity among individuals who are looking for long-lasting manicures. They offer remarkable durability and natural shine as compared to the other types of acrylic nails.
However, there comes a point when you want to change your nail manicure style, take a break from what you normally do with your nails, or want to give your natural nails a breathing space.
Removing solar nails without acetone can be challenging, but not impossible.
Acetone continues to be a popular option for removing nail extensions like solar nails, but this method can be harsh on your natural nails and skin.
Thankfully, there are various alternative methods that are equally safe and easy.
We have piled up 9 easy methods to remove solar nails at home without using acetone.
All you need are a few handy supplies and follow the easy methods listed below.

- Cuticle oil
- Warm water
- Dental floss
- Isopropyl alcohol
- Olive oil
- Hydrogen peroxide
- Nail polish remover (acetone-free)
- Epsom salt

Method 1: Soaking Your Nails in Warm Water and liquid soap
One of the easiest ways to remove solar nails without acetone is using a warm water soak.
Here’s how to do it:
Step 1: Prepare a bowl of warm water and add a tablespoon of liquid soap.
Step 2: Soak your nails for 15-20 minutes. This will help loosen up the solar nails and make them easier to remove.
Step 3: Using a cuticle pusher gently remove the nails by pushing the edges of the solar nails. Then gradually lift the edges and slide the nails off.
It may take some time and multiple soakings before the solar nails start loosening up enough to be removed completely.
Method 2: Dental Floss or Tape Method
Another effective method is the dental floss or ribbon technique.
This method involves using dental floss or dental tape, which you might already have lying around in your bathroom cabinet.
Here’s how to do it:
Step 1: Cut a piece of dental floss or dental tape.
Step 2: Gently slide the floss or tape underneath the edges of the nails.
Step 3: Slowly lift and wiggle the floss/tape to loosen and remove the nails.
Method 3: Oil-based technique
Using oil is another excellent way to remove solar nails without acetone.
Oils like olive oil or coconut oil can help break down the adhesives while moisturizing your nails and cuticles.
Step 1: Apply a great amount of oil around the edges of the nails.
Step 2: Allow the oil to sit for a few minutes (20 minutes), giving it time to penetrate and weaken the adhesive.
Step 3: Using a cuticle stick gently lift the solar nails from your natural nails.
Method 4: Diluted Alcohol Solution
Step 1: Take alcohol in a bowl and dilute it with an equal amount of water.
Step 2: Then soak 10 cotton balls in the solution and place them on top of your nails.
Step 3: Wrap your fingers in aluminum foil and let it sit for about 20-30 minutes. Remove them after the time is up.
Step 4: Using a cuticle pusher remove the softened nails.
Method 5: Hydrogen Peroxide Mixture
Step 1: Make a solution of hydrogen peroxide and water (equal amounts).
Step 2: Soak your nails for 15-20 minutes. The nails will become loose, allowing you to gently remove them.
Method 6: Soaking method Using an acetone-free nail polish remover
Opt for an acetone-free nail polish remover.
Soak your nails for a short period (10-25 mins) and then gently buff the softened nails using a nail buffer or sanding block. Continue until the nails are completely removed.
Method 7: Epsom Salt and warm water Soak
Add Epsom salt to warm water and soak your nails for 15-20 minutes. The nails should become flexible enough, allowing you to easily peel them off.
Method 8: Glycerin Soak
Soak your nails in a mixture of glycerin and warm water. After about 15-20 minutes, you should be able to gently lift off the nails.
Method 9: Buffing Technique
This technique is easy to follow but requires time and practice.
Use a fine-grit sanding block to gently buff the nails. Start from the outer edges and work your way inwards. This technique gradually thins out the nails, allowing for easy removal.
Always remember to moisturize your nails with cuticle oil and a hand moisturizer to restore hydration.
